5 REASONS I LOVE MY WEBSITE

Today I want to share a secret with you – I love my website.  I love writing it, promoting it and planning for it’s future and here are five reasons why.     DIVERSITY I wanted to start a blog for years before I launched my website. The problem was I didn’t know what I wanted to write about.  I absolutely love to cook, but I really didn’t want to devote my blog to cooking because what if I didn’t make anything interesting enough to post for a while? My blog would sit there static. I didn’t want that....

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT – THE RECYCLED CHARACTER

When it comes to character development, I have no problem coming up with the main character and the secondary or supporting characters.  I see them clearly in the office, at the crime scene or eating an ice cream cone by the river.  What bogs me down are the tertiary characters.  I don’t mean the throwaways ones like the guy who sells them their frozen treat, but the one who will contribute in some significant way.  I found myself spending way too much time sitting in front of the computer contemplating whether they are a man or a...

CHARACTER PROFILES – MY EVOLVING ADDICTION

I was chatting a few days ago with a friend who said she had heard a term in a writing forum she didn’t know. She asked me what a character profile was and how to create one. I thought the best advice I could give her was, “The best way to keep a character profile is ‘your’ way.” For me a character profile is where I maintain a record of my character’s past, present and future, for my friend it will properly be a place where she also keeps a record of a character’s magical powers and where...

FINDING INSPIRATION AS A MYSTERY WRITER

Often when I tell someone that I am a writer their first question is always “What do you write?” The answer to that is easy, I write mysteries. Most of them are legal mysteries where an attorney is the main character, but I do enjoy writing mysteries in other genres. Usually the next question is where do I get my inspiration. Inspiration can come from any source. Some people find their inspiration in a country song, either the lyrics or the title. Others find their stories embedded in historical events and create a fictional character who was there....

FORESHADOWING – A FICTION WRITER’S HINT OF THINGS TO COME

Foreshadowing is a writer’s way of giving the reader hints of events to come, an incentive to keep turning the page and for me one of my favorite part of the story to write. For mystery writers foreshadowing is essential as it is how we give our audience clues which they will need to solve the puzzle presented in the story. Foreshadowing can be obvious, for example – “When Harry woke up on Monday he had no way of knowing that by Friday he’d be dead and #8221; The reader may not know how it is going to happen,...

GOOD VERSUS EVIL – WRITING THE VILLAIN.

Not all novels require the presence of a villain, but a story can’t have a hero unless there is someone, or something, to overcome. When a story requires a villain, that character needs to be believable. Villains vary in size, class and sexual preference. In any group of people, from a kindergarten class to a gathering of world leaders, there are the good and the evil. One must consider balance when writing a story. If the protagonist and the antagonist are the two main characters they need to be equally represented, even if only from one perspective. A villain...

DESCRIPTION AND SETTING

HOW TO CREATE A FICTIONAL SETTING

When I first started writing fiction, with the intent to accomplish a novel other people would want to read, I was uncommitted as to a setting for my story. Born and raised on Long Island, I was very familiar with NYC and thought that would be a good backdrop for my story. After writing a few chapters I realized I wanted my character, an attorney, and the story to have a more relaxed pace. I decided on suburban South Carolina for no other reason than that is where I was living at the time. Originally, I picked my hometown;...

DESCRIPTION AND SETTING

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

GETTING THE SETTING RIGHT   Regardless of the genre of a story, all fiction writers must decide on a setting where it will unfold. Picking a setting is too important to leave to a random dart tossed at a map. In order to be believable, the setting must make sense for the characters and for the story itself. The writer must consider several things in order to choose the setting.  Physical Location: Where on the globe, or in the universe, the story will take place influences who you can write about. If you want your main character to be...

MY ROAD TO MY WRITER’S PLATFORM

Much has been said about the need to have a Writer’s Platform. For those who have missed the buzz, gone are the good ole’ days when an agent found you a publisher and that publisher, convinced of your future success, did a full court press to get you and your book ‘out there’ and the writer simply showed up to a few interviews and industry parties and collected their royalty checks. Getting accepted in the publishing industry today means having a presence in the literary world before you are published. Often that presence, or platform, consists of a website...
