A Recipe for Fish Emulsion

Fish fertilizer or emulsion is a wonderful product for promoting plant growth. You can buy fish emulsion at your local gardening store. I prefer to make my own, it’s easy, cheap and has more nutrients and beneficial bacteria than the commercially produced products. The disadvantage is that when made properly it stinks. I have a two acre plot with several flowerbeds and make fish emulsion in a five gallon container, twice a year. This is more than enough for me, so if your yard is smaller you can cut this recipe to fit your needs or give some...

BACON WRAPPED JALAPENOS

by Reese Millridge I don’t know about you, but sometimes, in my house, I feel like a short order cook.  Hamburgers range from the consistancy of a hockey puck to so bloody you’d think it was a crime scene.  Eggs are eaten so runny I don’t know why we even bother to cook them or so dry if you turned on the ceiling fan they would disappear like dust. Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos offer the same challenge. There are four people in my family and each has a very different preference when it comes to food.  One of us likes...

BEEF ENCHILADAS

by Reese Millridge I was rather surprised when my dear friend Michelle, the publisher of New Grace News, asked me if I would like to write a column for the paper. I am not a writer, nor do I pretend to be. Her request came out of left field, which she knew it would, sneaky little devil that she is. Let me tell you the setup. It was a rainy Monday afternoon when the phone rang. My friend, Michelle, went into the whole ‘it’s been so long’ routine – which was true. She suggested we do dinner one day,...

CHAMPAGNE MARGARITAS

Saturday was my friend Renee’s birthday.  She loves to entertain so she invited a bunch of us girls to her house for brunch.  As much as she loves to entertain she hates to cook. So, I cooked for the get together.  It was such a pleasure, she has the nicest home kitchen of anyone I know. I made Spinach Blue Cheese Quiche and Champagne Margaritas, a wonderful combination of two of my favorite drinks. Print Yum CHAMPAGNE MARGARITAS Ingredients4 T lime juice 2 oz tequila 2 oz Triple Sec 6 oz champagne or sparkling wineInstructionsFirst you want to get sugar...

CHICKEN BREAST STUFFED WITH TOMATO, ZUCCHINI AND BASIL

by Reese Millridge I have a confession to make. I am very surprised to be writing this article. This is only the second edition I am appearing in and I have spent the last two weeks fretting over what to make as if this decision was some crucial turning point in my life. Should I make a vegetable dish to show that I believe in  healthy cooking?  Should I make Amaretto Crème Brulee to show I am creative or will that be seen as decadent? Then on Thursday night my husband, Merrick, told me his cousin and his wife...

CREAM OF ONION SOUP

by REESE MILLRIDGE Today I will be sharing my recipe for CREAM OF ONION SOUP. One thing I love to make is soup. There is nothing better on a cold or rainy day then something hot and filling.  And on those hot days a nice light chilled soup which I can whip up quickly hits the spot. As I believe I have said before there are four members in my family and one is a real pain when it comes to eating –  her favorite vegetable is the onion.  Now I have nothing against onions – I always have...

SOUTHERN FALL LAWN CARE

by John S S Slater –   Here in the south where summer day temperatures seldom fall below ninety degrees, doing landscape projects is best left for any other season. Fall is the perfect time to resurface a patio, fix a path or build that super outdoor kitchen you’ve been dreaming about. Fall cleanup will aid to the appearance of your winter garden and set everything up nicely for the flowers that will be sticking their heads out of the ground in the spring. Remove annuals that are no longer healthy or adding to the beauty of your garden. Clean...

SOUTHERN SPRING LAWN CARE

by John S S Slater This article is about Southern Spring Lawn Care, but first I want to talk about my garden. I hope you don’t mind. Something weird is going on in my garden. My plants are coming up in the strangest order or not at all.  I have four types of daffodils in my flower beds, usually by this time all of them have popped through the dirt and are in different stages of blooming.  However, only one type has come and the flowers are already dying. None of the others have made any appearance. What happened...
